William Mansfield Poole was born on 6 April 1871 in Clifton, then in the county of Gloucestershire.〔England 1911 Census〕 He was the son of Robert Burton Poole who was then a Master at Clifton College and would later be Headmaster of Bedford Modern School between 1877 and 1900.〔''Oxford Men and Their Colleges 1880-1892〕〔''School of the Black and Red-A History of Bedford Modern School'' by Andrew Underwood (1981); reset and updated by Peter Boon, Paul Middleton and Richard Wildman, 2010〕 Poole was educated at Bedford Modern School and Magdalen College, Oxford where he took part in the 1891 Boat Race.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Oxford men, 1880-1892, with a record of their schools, honours and degrees. Poole was the author of several text books and head of Modern Languages at the Royal Naval College, Osborne.〔 He later lived in Belgium.〔 In 1908, he married the Hon.
